Confidence is a disposition that is conditioned through experiences. When a person experiences success, that person will tend to expect to be successful. And that expectation will cause a feeling of confidence.
For example: A young man wants to learn how to be a prizefighter, so he gets a manager and a trainer. His manager will not setup a bout for him until he has generated proficient skills. And even then, the manager will only put him up against a challenger that he knows his fighter can surpass. When his fighter beats the competitor, he is successful, and starts to gain confidence in his capability.
With each fight, the manager puts his fighter up against a challenger who is only a slightly better competitor then the last, but not good enough to beat his man. By the end of the third fight, the young fighter begins to expect to win his fourth, and so his confidence continues to expand. This scenario continues to repeat itself. And as long as the fighter continues to win, his expectations of success, and his feelings of self-confidence will continue to expand.
If a person who has a long history of success and feelings of self-confidence does fail, they still tend to expect success the next time out. Conversely, when a person who is weak in the self-confidence department fails, they tend to lose confidence, and begin to expect failure, which can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Having true self-confidence doesn’t mean that individuals will be able to do everything. Usually people who have self-confidence have attainable expectations. Even when some of their expectations are not met, they continue to be positive and to accept themselves.
People, who are not self-confident, tend to depend unreasonably on the acceptance of others in order to feel good about themselves. They avoid risks because of the fear of failure. They belittle themselves and tend to discount or ignore compliments that they do receive.
Conversely, secure people will risk the disapproval of other people because they generally have confidence in their own qualifications. Just because a person does not have confidence, it does not mean that he/she doesn’t have abilities. A lack of self-confidence is often the result of centering much too strongly on the unreal expectancy of other people, especially parents and friends. The affect of friends can be more powerful than those of parents in shaping the feelings about one’s self.
Beliefs That Continue to Influence Self-Confidence
In response to external influences, people develop assumptions; some of these are helpful and some are not. Several assumptions that can interfere with self-confidence and alternative ways of thinking are:
ASSUMPTION: I always have to be successful at every challenge I undertake. This is a totally unrealistic assumption. In real life, everyone has his/her strengths and weaknesses. While it’s important to do the best that one can, it’s more important to learn to accept the self as being human, and fallible. Feel good about what you are good at, and accept the fact that you don’t know everything and you are not an expert at everything.
ASSUMPTION: I must be perfect, and loved by everyone, and satisfy everyone. Again, this is a totally unrealistic assumption. All human beings are deficient. It’s better to develop personal standards and values that are not completely dependent on the approval of others.
ASSUMPTION: Everything that happened to me in the past remains in control of my feelings and behaviors in the present.
ALTERNATIVE: While it is true that your confidence was especially influenced by external influences when you were a young child, as you grow to adulthood, you can gain understanding and outlook on what those influences have been. In doing so, you can choose which influences you will continue to allow to have an effect on your life. You don’t have to be helpless based on what happened in the past.
HERE ARE SOME STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPING CONFIDENCE
Emphasize Your Strengths. Think about and give yourself credit for everything you can do. And grant yourself credit for every new thing that you are willing to undertake.
Take risks. Adopt the attitude of: I never fail, because there are NO failures. However, sometimes I learn what does not work, and once I’ve learned what doesn’t work in a given situation, I can attempt something else.
Use Self-Talk: Use an inner dialog with yourself and counter harmful assumptions. Then, tell yourself to stop. Substitute more reasonable assumptions. For example, when you catch yourself expecting perfection, remind yourself that it’s impossible to be an expert at all things, and that it’s only possible to do things to the best of your ability. This allows you to accept yourself while still striving to improve.
Make mental movies: Visualize yourself in the various scenarios that you currently lack confidence in. But see yourself behaving as like a person who has tremendous self-confidence would. There are powerful self-hypnosis and NLP procedures that you can use to build a monumental amount of confidence from within your subconscious mind. There are even NLP techniques that will let you take confidence that you do have in areas of your life, and then transplant that confidence to areas of your life that are lacking confidence!
Self-Evaluate: Learn to rank yourself independently. Bypass the frequent sense of chaos that comes from relying on what other people think.

Educate Yourself About Lasik Eye Surgery
July 21st, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
If you are one of those guys who is just tired and fed up of wearing glasses and for some reason you don’t find contact lens too comfortable, then eye surgery might just be the best choice available to you. With glasses you have to wear them everywhere all the time.
You can’t take them off on a damp day even if they turn foggy at times. Then on a sunny day you have to shift to a prescription sunglass because the normal ones wouldn’t work for you. Such constant companionship with your glasses can be tiring to say the least. If you are seriously thinking to go for lasik, your days of wearing glasses are now numbered.
Studies reveal that the operation is successful almost to the tune of 95% which is quite a commendable rate of success. But are you eligible for the surgery?
For this eye surgery to be performed one must be above 21 years of age. If someone is below 21 years, no matter how bad his or her condition is, the person wouldn’t be considered ready by optometrists for the surgery. If you are a person who is into some kind of contact sports and your future depended on playing that sport, then surgery is definitely not an option for you.
Eye surgery comes with its own set of risks and they should always be considered seriously before you actually sign-up for an operation. Problems that might be caused due to this operation are double vision, glare, and halo. One’s nighttime vision can also be affected, especially for certain operation procedures. Even permanent blurry vision and diminished contrast may be the effects of surgery. It is not implied that eye surgery is a high-risk operation. But you should know the facts beforehand.
Because it is an irreversible process this surgery wouldn’t be covered by most insurance plans. However you also have the option of availing the various finance schemes that help you out in paying the costs of the operation.
The costs depend on a few factors. First of all the process you and your surgeon settle on. The more advance a process you go for the more expensive it will be for you. Also the expertise of your surgeon will determine how much he will be charging for the eye surgery.
Laser eye surgery is virtually pain free as the cornea is anesthetized using special drops. There may be mild discomfort when the anesthetic wears off but this irritation should be minor and last only a few hours. Laser vision correction is a very quick procedure which can take between 15 and 40 seconds.
Most patients notice an improvement within 3 to 5 days of having laser eye surgery. So whether you choose lasik eye surgery or any other type or procedure, make sure to do your research and consult a reputable clinic. It is critical that before undertaking anything like this, you are well educated and can go in with confidence.
Healthy Lifestyle Tips for Seniors
July 21st, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Nutrition is important at every stage of life. Regardless of age, we all require healthy foods to help our bodies thrive, but seniors and elderly people have specialized nutritional needs.
There are several factors affecting nutrition and healthy dietary choices for seniors. One area that greatly affects the health needs of the elderly is basic body composition. Hormonal activity, for example, decreases as a person ages. This results in weight gain and the loss of muscle and bone.
Here are some other health considerations for people enjoying their senior years:
Water
As we age, the amount of water found in our bodies naturally decreases. Certain personal habits can also affect these fluid levels. Many seniors don’t drink enough water simply because they don’t feel thirsty. Others find it inconvenient or even difficult to pour a glass of water. These difficulties can cause elderly people to become dehydrated very easily. It is recommended that seniors drink at least one ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of body weight.
Pack in the Protein
Protein is an essential nutrient at every stage of life. It supports a healthy immune system and prevents wasted muscle. Even though energy needs are decreased in the elderly, it’s still important for seniors to eat high quality proteins such as eggs, lean meats, fish and poultry.
Fiber and Carbs
It’s no surprise to learn that seniors require additional fiber in the diet. Food rich in fiber, when combined with plenty of water, helps to prevent constipation. Active seniors will also thrive on the carbohydrates found in pasta, bread, cereals and other energy-producing grain products.
Good Fats
The body’s natural metabolism slows down as age increases, so nutrition for seniors means less fat in their diets. It’s important to note that fat should be limited, but not eliminated altogether. You can trim the amount of daily fat intake by choosing fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and fat-free or fat-reduced preparation methods.
Keep Up Your Calcium
One vital element of nutrition for seniors is calcium, and many people just don’t get enough of it. The calcium requirement for the elderly is about 1,500 mg per day. People often struggle with digestive problems from drinking milk, but there are many alternative calcium sources. Non-fat powdered milk can be used in many recipes. Other foods such as low-fat cheese, yogurt and even broccoli are delicious calcium-rich options.
Iron Deficiency
Seniors should eat a diet rich in natural sources of iron, including choices like lean red meats and breakfast cereals. Too many older women and men live with iron deficiencies.
Zinc
Many seniors neglect zinc as an important contributor to good nutrition. The fact that zinc isn’t readily absorbed into the body compounds the problem. Including healthy servings of poultry, meat and fish can help seniors to meet their daily zinc requirements.
Vitamin B12 and Atrophic Gastritis
A common problem with elderly men and women is B12 deficiency caused by a condition called atrophic gastritis. The vitamin B12 can only be absorbed when an intrinsic factor is present in the stomach. However, a person with atrophic gastritis will suffer from an inflammation of the stomach that causes bacterial overgrowth and impedes the intrinsic factor. Patients suffering vitamin B12 deficiency should talk to a doctor about supplemental options.
To grow and remain healthy, people of all ages require a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Seniors face additional age-related health concerns and should be particularly aware of their nutritional needs. Aging brings changes to every body, but good nutrition helps many seniors continue to lead vital, active lifestyles.

Is Grocery Shopping Food For Thought?
July 21st, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Grocery shopping was hazardous to my health. There I was in the supermarket, struggling with an almost overflowing shopping cart that had just developed one of those go-only-one-way wheels, when a passer-by kiddingly said, “Boy, you eat a lot”.
Suddenly I looked at my cart differently. Captain Crunch Cereal – no, Matey, that’s not for me. Double-stuffed Oreos – I wouldn’t eat anything called double-stuffed. Just the word stuffed is an uncomfortable reminder of how I feel for several hours every Thanksgiving. Beer – no, my kind of bud goes in a vase; and I haven’t needed a vase in a very, very long time – but I digress.
I wanted to find the passer-by and tell him that it wasn’t me who ate a lot. It was my family. Yes, the very same family who was at home doing their own thing. Why was grocery shopping meant to be my own thing? It’s as much fun as cleaning Venetian blinds.
Right then and there I made a new rule – or maybe it was a very belated New Year’s resolution. “If you eat it, you shop for it”. From that day on grocery shopping was a family activity. A family that shops together, gets it done faster and thus doesn’t have to stay together as long.
My family, needless to say, was reluctant at first; but suggesting a week of liver, eggplant and corn mush dinners was all the encouragement they needed to volunteer to be my supermarket soldiers.
When we went to the supermarket, there was a plan of attack. Each of us went in a different direction – baked goods, canned goods, dairy and miscellaneous. Then we each got our personal items. Finally we met in produce. Why produce? Because you can’t trust sons who think vegetables are their enemy to pick out vegetables. It’s like asking them to pick their poison.
After produce had been procured, I checked the cart to make sure everything in it was on the list. No grocery carte blanche was allowed.
Finally we re-grouped at the check-out line, where I had time to pretend I wasn’t reading the National Enquirer, my sons squabbled about whose turn it was to get the toy in the Captain Crunch and my husband grumbled about making window washing a family activity.
Unfortunately, it seems a family that grocery shops together gets fed up together. Fortunately, however, I can live with that.
Eight Steps to Better Public Speaking
July 20th, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Be prepared. If you’re naturally nervous about public speaking, then being poorly prepared will only make matters worse. Make investment and take the time do your homework properly. Plan what you’re going to say, do the research, and take thorough notes. Knowing you are ready before you get up on stage will give you more confidence.
Speak from notes, don’t read a pre-written speech. It takes a highly-trained, professional actor to be able to read sentences from a page and make them sound like natural speech. If you have those acting skills, you certainly don’t need to read this information. But if you’re like most of us, it’s best not to read a speech. A few notes with key words or phrases written on index cards will remind you of what ideas you will talk about. Structure your talk with an introduction, middle and conclusion. Tell what you’re going to say, say it, then tell what you’ve said.
Be yourself. Make it real. When you’re talking about something familiar to yourself, you will feel more natural and your audience will accept you more readily. So think of how your topic relates to yourself, and include stories that relate to your own personal experience.
Rehearse, at least a couple of times, preferably at least one day before your speech. Once you are familiar with everything written on your note cards, you’ll have no trouble telling people about it. And “sleeping on it” does wonders for helping you remember facts and figures.
Prepare yourself mentally, like an athlete before a competition. Immediately before going out onto the stage, take a few moments to be by yourself and “psych” yourself into a positive frame of mind. Repeat the following phrase to yourself several times: “I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad you’re here. I know what I know.”
When you’re in position on the stage, wait an extra moment before you start. Take a deep breath, and try to remember to keep breathing. If your mouth is dry, have a glass or bottle of water handy and take a sip.
Direct your speech to one person. Imagine that someone you like and trust, and someone who likes you, is way in the back of the audience. Address the majority of your speech to her or him. Of course, don’t just stare in one spot. Once you’ve gained momentum, pick out a few other friendly faces in different parts of the audience and include them in what you have to say.
Smile. Unless your talk is about something deadly serious, let the audience see that you’re having a good time up there. Don’t rush. Savor the moment. Speaking too fast makes your words hard to understand. If the audience can see that you feel good, that will make them feel good too, and your speech will be even more successful.

Maturing Wines In Separate Stocks
July 20th, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
I am afraid I always have to suppress a grin when people ask me how long a wine needs to mature because I know that all they really want to know is how soon they can drink it. It is surprising the number of people who simply will not believe that wines improve with age. They set about making wines possessed of an urgency which should not exist and an impatience that is hard to believe. They really believe that wine can be made, matured and drunk in six or seven weeks.
With luck, you might get fermentation over and done with and your wines clear and bottled in that time, and truly they are drinkable even so young, but and it is an enormous ‘but’ wine tasted at that tender age cannot be compared with the same wine tasted a year later. It is impossible to describe the changes that take place, but take place they do. Chemical changes are taking place constantly, so that one batch of wine does not taste the same when sampled at intervals of six weeks.
I know full well that you will be itching to get your teeth into these wines and I cannot blame you for that I’m the same myself, always anxious to sample the latest batch to be bottled off. And it is a waste of time for me to tell you to keep it at least a year before drinking because I know you’ll never manage it; especially after you had a taste of it when siphoning it into bottles.
But please do this for your own sake. At bottling time, put, say, two bottles in the attic or some place where they cannot be reached easily send them to me if you like. Seriously, those two bottles of each lot made will soon mount up to a nice little stock. The remaining four bottles from each gallon may be used as required.
The whole secret of building up a stock is to make several lots at the same time and when a jar is emptied at bottling time, start again with another lot. In this way you will always have a few gallons fermenting, several dozen bottles for use as required and a dozen or so slowly growing into a nice reserve.
Then, when the first two bottles put away are a year or two old you may sample them. These will have become such magnificent wines in that time that your lesson will have been well and truly learned and the vow taken that henceforth half of all that is bottled is going to the attic. I hope it does, and I hope even more that you will be able to keep some of it for five years at least. For at five years it is better than age four and at three years old it is better than age two. I have proved all this to myself and have a few bottles of wine that I made over fifteen years ago. Must see what they’re like, soon.

Why Master Public Speaking and Presentation Skills
July 20th, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Public speaking and presentation skills are skills that we all need at some time in our lives. Many people have a deep fear of public speaking and fear it more than even death.
“According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”
Jerry Seinfeld
While you can’t cheat death, anyone can learn to master public speaking and making presentations. Surely it would be better to master these skills than to quiver with mortal fear anytime you were asked to make a presentation? Wouldn’t it be great to see such requests as a great opportunity to sell yourself, your products and or services?
Now selling is one of the most loathed professions but everyone is in the business of selling whether you want to believe it or not. Nothing happens without a sale. Robert Louis Stevenson said “Everyone lives by selling something” and one of the world’s greatest orators said:
“Half my lifetime I have earned my living by selling words, and I hope thoughts.”
Sir Winston Churchill
Fundamentally, when you are engaged in public speaking or making a presentation you are selling words but it is your ability to organise and deliver words in a coherent, congruent and compelling manner that counts. To be able to sell effectively you must have great communication skills.
Dr Topher Morrison, master NLP Trainer and speaker said that a friend of his wanted to buy a Rolex watch. They visited a local shop in Tampa, Florida but because the salesman lacked good presentation skills his friend left without making a purchase. When you are about to spend thousands of dollars you want to be served in a particular manner. In fact, his friend took a trip to the Bahamas just to purchase his Rolex watch justifying the trip by saying the savings he made by buying the watch duty-free paid for the trip.
How much money are you losing every day because you lack public speaking and presentation skills?
John Childers, described as the “millionaire maker” and who teaches one of the world’s most expensive public speaking training courses describes public speaking as “the world’s most profitable skill.” He has trained some of the biggest names in the public speaking arena – individuals such as Alex Mandossian, Armand Morin, Mark Victor Hansen, Mike Filsaime, Debra Johnson and the list goes on and on. They all know the value of using public speaking to grow their businesses. Irrespective of the different products and services they offer, they all use their public speaking skills to promote their products and services as well as those of others.
Through public speaking and making presentations you increase your visibility and the visibility of your company or organisation. You cannot achieve success if no one knows about you. Public speaking is one of the best ways to gain visibility and build your business. Arvee Robinson who describes herself as a “Persuasive Speech Coach” says that every time she speaks she get new clients.
How much is a new client worth to you?
Don’t think that these skills are limited to standing on a stage in front of scores or even hundreds of people. Don’t think that a presentation has to be hours long. It can be mere minutes. Christine Comaford-Lynch, author of “Rules for Renegades” said that she once camped out in the reception area of a company for six hours to get the opportunity to meet with its CEO. She wanted him to join the board of directors of one of her companies. If she was successful in her mission it would’ve have added enormous value to the perceived financial value of her company. Millions of dollars were literally at stake. After waiting for hours for a chance to speak to this CEO she had minutes to persuade to get on board. Can you see how critical presentation skills would be in a situation like this?
When you introduce yourself you use these skills. Do you want to make an immediate impact? Do you want to be a person that people gravitate towards and want to get to know? Or do you want to be the person that no one remembers. An introduction can last mere seconds and yet leave a lasting impression. You want that impression to be a favourable one.
Some people are natural orators but even they have to practice. The best professional public speakers spend years honing their craft. Dave Lakhani, speaker and author of “Persuasion: The Art of Getting What You Want” says:
“Speaking is a business and a process and processes are built on the back of education.”
Through mastering public speaking and presentation skills you can build a career that will serve you a lifetime and can provide you with an income anywhere in the world. Even if you don’t want to become a professional speaker through mastering your public speaking and presentation skills you can vastly improve your business profit margins and enhance the quality of your life.
Antiques Mean Something Different To Everyone
July 20th, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Many people, myself included love the look of old things. We love to furnish our homes with old furniture and different nick knacks that have come from a different era. Many of these things are antiques while many are just old looking. It has become very popular these days to decorate your house with older looking furniture. Many manufacturers make modern furniture that look like antiques but in fact are not.
This is a cheaper way for people to have the look without the expense. Of course they also miss out on the history that goes with the original piece. But for many people including myself it is an option that we welcome. Many of my original antiques are things that have been handed down through the generations of my family. These things I really treasure. Then the rest are copies that blend in very well with the look that I like.
I could not tell you if any of my antiques are very valuable or not but I must say that I love them because of the way they look, their craftsmanship and of course for their sentimental value. It is such a shame to think that so many antiques have been thrown out or destroyed over time because they were old and not fashionable any more.
If you are someone who really loves the original product whether it be furniture, cars, glass wear, dolls and so on and you want to purchase some then you should know a little bit about antiques. If you don’t, then ask someone who does to help you. There are so many people out there ready to rip you off so you should be well armed. Just because something looks old and you love it does not mean it is worthy of an expensive antique price tag.
Of course, in the end if you’ve got the money and that is what you want then price doesn’t really matter but generally for the average person you should only pay what the product is truly worth. Especially if you want this product as an investment as many collectors do.
You need to learn about things such as certain markings or numbers to look for on some antiques. It is a way of knowing that they are original. It’s sad to think that there are also many remakes that are being sold as the originals when they are really just excellent copies. That is why it is important to learn a few things.
Ask around to find an antique dealer that has a good reputation. Then go and talk to him or her about what you are interested in. They can be a great source of information. There are also many good books that will be very helpful and educational. Once you arm yourself with this knowledge then you can start shopping with confidence.

No Surgery and Fewer Hassles, Skin Peels are the Easiest Skin Treatment
July 20th, 2009 by julia97 · No Comments · Uncategorized
A skin peel is surely better than peeling skin. That’s something that the skin conscious are quite sure about. For skin peels are now a hot favorite in non-surgical skin treatments. Skin peels are not only an assured and easy way to a youthful skin but are also a great cure and medication for acne and hyperpigmentation.
What makes skin peels so popular is that the treatment generally takes only about 30 minutes to an hour, per session. The best bit is that skin peels can also be used in the comfort of your home.
To start off, it’s best you visit a dermatologist for advice on the kind of peels that would suit your skin type. The best chemical peels contain Tricholoracetic Acid (TCA), a safe and non-toxic chemical. TCA is a deep peel that acts as a safe medicine for acne, wrinkles, spotty skin, blackheads, sun burns, age spots, acne scarring, oily skin and dull complexion.
However, you can always talk to your doctor if you are taking prescribed medication. The doc will suggest whether to continue the medicines during the chemical peel treatment. Skin peels containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) are generally superficial. A Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peel is deeper.
“TCA Peel is widely recommended for darker skin medication.
It also ensures a quicker recovery period than a deep phenol peel,” says Dr Dorothy Moss. What’s more, while OTC medicines work well on minor skin problems, skin peels are a more effective and speedy medication for the removal of dead skin cells and acute acne.
Moreover, it’s an easy treatment that involves application of the chemical peel to the affected areas (neck, upper arms, back and face, avoiding the eyes, brows and lips). Iced saline is used after the treatment, to soothe the skin. The skin is back to its natural glow after 15 to 45 minutes. To round off the treatment, an oil-based ointment is smeared to soften the skin. And the greatest news is that the TCA Peel is also an effective medication to keep pre-cancerous lesions away.
You could also make natural skin peels right at home. Natural skin peels ensure elasticity, open clogged pores, soften fine lines, wrinkles, reduce hyperpigmentation and boost collagen production.
“To make a natural peel, mildly heat a pack of unflavored gelatin, add the juice of a lemon and an orange until the gelatin is well blended. Let cool and then whip an egg yolk into the mix. Apply on the face and neck and let it dry. Rinse off properly with warm water,” suggests skin specialist Rita Bogart.
And once you have made your choice of skin peels just sit back and bask in the afterglow.
